Some athletes, runners and regular office employees may get pain in between their 3rd and the 4th toes of their feet.  There are nerves that run in between each toe that provide the sensory and motor information for each digit. A neuroma is known as a benign growth. Morton's Neuroma is specialized as a thickening of tissues around the nerve that leads to the toes. Morton's Neuroma usually develops between the third and fourth toes in response to irritation, from trauma, narrow or high-heeled shoes. Symptoms may include a burning or numbness pain that radiates from the ball of the foot to the toes.

Individuals that have been diagnosed as having flat feet are more susceptible to Morton’s Neuroma as the low arches cause more pressure to be placed on that forefoot compressing or irritating the nerves. Remember that at Frederick’s Foot and Ankle Specialist, Dr. Yanes, Dr. Steinberg, and Dr. Ho can diagnose if you have flat feet and can monitor and prevent Morton’s Neuroma before it occurs!

In most cases, best treatment for Morton’s Neuroma is a properly fitting shoe with an orthotic device fitted with heel pads and heel seats to secure the foot. Recent NBA champion, Jason Kidd, uses orthotics with heel pads and heel seats to prevent Morton’s neuromas as well as prevention of biomechanic problems. However, orthotics are not for all patients. At our locations at Frederick and Urbana, Maryland we can provide a wide variety of treatments that will help relieve and cure the neuroma. Other conservative treatments usually resolve the pain or progressions of the condition, and range from wearing roomier, lower-heeled footwear; minimizing the weight from the forefoot to relieve pressure from the compressed nerve. Injections of corticosteroid medication can also be used to reduce the swelling and inflammation. Any discussion of surgery will be considered with the patient after all conservative treatment has been exhausted.

As always check your feet daily and stop by! It can help avoid future health problems!
