Do you have a non-healing Achilles tendon? Are you just in constant pain around your ankle? Well, there is a treatment called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy that can help your ailments without the need of surgery. This very treatment is provided at Fredrick Foot and Ankle Specialists. You know the saying the “treatment starts with the patient,” well this therapy, literally, starts with the patient. PRP is prepared from a small amount of the patient’s own blood.

Their blood is then taken to a centrifuge (machine that spins the blood), which separates the platelets and the rest of the blood. This procedure takes about 15-25 minutes, but is extremely important as it increase the concentration of platelets (and the likely hood of success) immensely. The key element is the increase in growth factors, which are necessary to start and increase the healing process. The patient is then locally injected to the area damaged. Though this procedure is cutting-edge technology it does not work immediately. Like all healing it takes time and maybe require more than one treatment.

Who should have this therapy done? Well anyone that would like to advance their treatment and especially any athlete with chronic ailments. Athletes Tiger Woods and, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Hines Ward both constantly receiver PRP therapy on their respected knee. If you have chronic Achilles pain and/or have damaged a tendon or ligament you should come see Dr. Steinberg at either one of our locations at Fredrick or Urbana, MD.

As a patient what should you expect? You should expect to see an improvement in overall health of your ailment. You will potentially prevent surgery, which prevents further scar tissues and fibrosis. The injections allow the patient to have an increase in range of motion, flexibility and strength.

As always, it should be kept in mind that we are all created differently. Therefore, there are different times of recovery for patients. It is important to note that if this therapy is given and the patient follows the doctor’s instructions the patient could avoid, all together, going ‘under-the-knife’. This therapy should stimulate the wound healing process and help treat injuries in; muscle, ligaments and tendons and even bone.
