The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that diabetes is the nation’s leading cause of death, with one in 10 American adults afflicted with the disease. As recent as January 2011, some 18.8 million children and adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with diabetes, with an estimated 7 million more undiagnosed and 79 million others considered as prediabetic.

Despite being the leading cause of death, a diagnosis of diabetes is almost never viewed as serious. This is probably due to the fact that the health problems associated with the disease are misunderstood. Even some celebrities make the common mistake of seeing diabetes as just a ‘word.’ In an August 2009 Diabetes Forecast interview, Larry King (talk show host) revealed that his aunt had diabetes, but she appeared healthy to him so, "diabetes was just a word to me." But at Fredrick Foot and Ankle Specialists we strive to inform our patients with the best education on diabetes and ways to prevent diabetes if you are prediabetic.

There are many different foot complications that can arise from diabetes. The most prominent is neuropathy (nervous system damage) affects about 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes and is a major complication. The nerve damage can cause a patient to lose pain, heat and cold sensation. There have been times where patients have walked into our clinic locations in Fredrick and Urbana, MD and have not noticed that they have a foot injury with an infection. In the most severe cases it can cause patients to lose their feet. We advise all our patients, diabetic and nondiabetic, to check their feet regularly if they can!

Other diabetes related foot changes range from skin changes, calluses, foot ulcers and poor circulation.  The skin can become more peeled and cracked/dry. Calluses build up faster on your high-pressure areas of your feet. And poor circulation can cause your feet to be vulnerable to infection and not to mention cold.

Dr. Ho, Yanesand Steinberg can provide many diabetic services and education at your next schedule appointment. We can provide treatment for calluses, diabetic foot care & ulcers and fit and order diabetic shoes.

As always, check your feet regularly!
