Flat feet are a common condition of the foot. Babies and toddlers, normally have flat feet (prior to walking). Arches develop throughout childhood until adulthood.  Pronation (which is leaning your feet toward the center of your body) is generally associated with flat feet. A significant amount of people with flat feet don’t feel pain. And that’s great! But if a person is feeling pain in that general region they should have their feet evaluated. At Fredrick’s Foot and Ankle Specialists we will go through this evaluation with you and provide and accommodate proper treatment.

There are two main causes of flat feet. One is where your arch never forms during childhood and usually presents itself bilaterally (on both feet). The second cause flat feet type is called adult-acquired flatfoot. It can be affect only one foot and it is usually caused by tibialis posterior tendonitis (tendon inflammation). Injury, over-stretch, and inflammation all contribute to tendonitis and can lead to severe disability and chronic pain. Further information over tibialis posterior tendonitis can be explained at our locations in Fredrick or Urbana, MD.

How can we tell whether your feet need treatment for flat feet? Well, if the patient is in pain Dr. Yanes, Dr. Steinberg, and Dr. Ho will provide the necessary accommodates to allow comfort. A quick test can be to ask the patient to stand on their toes. If an arch forms while standing on the toes, then it is a flexible flat foot. Normally, no further treatment is necessary. However, if no arch forms the patient has rigid flat feet and will need further exams to verify lay out a treatment.

Again, flat feet are generally treated only if the patient demonstrates pain in the foot, ankle or knee. Treatments can range from icing, physical therapy, supportive taping, bracing, orthotics and/or anti-inflammatory medications.

Generally, the treatments listed above are enough to treat flat feet. But if a tendon is damaged then surgery may be required. That happened to Kelly Osbourne a few years ago, while competing on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. She revealed later that her feet were in severe pain with each dance step. She has been diagnosed with flat feet and sometime during her lifetime tore some cartilage in both her feet.

As always check your feet regularly and stop by!
